A Magnificent 4.5-Star Destination Along Cape Breton's Cabot Trail

3 Moose!!

This morning Guests were treated to a wonderful sunny morning and LOOK! there goes 3 moose swimming across the lake! There is a point of land directly opposite the house where they hung out and munched away for quite a while. Everyone in the house was up and down to the lake to catch a photo or two. I only had binoculars – having left my camera elsewhere – so I have no photo to show. Trust me it was an exciting morning – then everyone returned to the house to tuck into a lovely breakfast featuring South of the Border, an egg and cheese dish. The recipe is further down this blog list – it’s great for a breakfast for many.
What a morning!

Great Walk!

The Red Island Trail is just five minutes drive from the B&B. Taking a little over an hour it is a wonderful lakeside, oceanside and forest walk. It is located off the property to the right as you face the St. Ann’s Bay United Church.

Summer vs Autumn

Being English Ian is convinced we Canadians have it wrong on our seasons. He believes it is STILL Summer and is still wearing shorts. School has started and naturally our thoughts turn to Fall (although Ian would prefer to call it Autumn he is fast loosing ground with his vocabulary).
No matter what you call it – the weather is fabulous!

Finally on line Bookings

We have finally gone “live” with our on line bookings system through Bookings.com
The Button “Book Now” appears on our Reservations section of the site.
This service is free to our guests. We use MasterCard and Visa for booking reservations.
You can still contact us the old way through emails and phone calls but we
finally decided that many guests prefer the on line service.

But we would still be happy to help you plan your holiday!
Just call or email either before or after your booking.

Check us out on Bookings.com

We have recently signed on with Bookings.com to handle on line bookings.

We were reluctant to follow this path – although we were strong recommended to do so.

We feel by chatting with our customers on line we can be sure to help in the planning of your trip and make the reservation process easier.  Of course you can still do that, however if you are one the growing number of people who like one stop shopping Bookings.com is convenient and free for our customers use.   We will send you a letter of confirmation from your booking on line so there is still an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about our property or what to do on the Cabot Trail.

We look forward to meeting you however you book!

Spring Time

Spring is often a wonder to visitors as our season is slightly behind the southern part of the province.  Our Forsythia has come and gone and so have the hundreds of daffodils that bloomed.  Ian has planted many different varieties from small Rip Van Winkles to large Alfreds.  The tulips are just at their peak and the lilac is just starting to open up.  In the spring garden photos you will notice some large orange hanging flowers – these are Crown Imperials – they smell awful – but they look grand and keep the moose out of the Garden!

We have several gardens on the property with many more flowers, iris, roses, and lilies yet to take centre stage.  I’ll keep you posted!

Garden Plans for the future here at English Country Garden B&B

In late August 2012 Ian and Penny visited the Jardins de Metis (Reford Gardens). These enchanted gardens, at the gateway to the Gaspe Peninsula in the Province of Quebec, gave Ian the impetus to plan new ideas in the gardens at the B&B.

When Ian and Penny bought the property in 2001 there were no gardens, just 37 acres of unspoiled woodlands on the side of a lake. The present gardens were started in 2004. Work has now started on redeveloping and extending the present gardens.

What will be different is that much of the new work will involve installations rather than just plants and flowers.

The following are planned:

  • The Heron walk
  • Renovations to the Iris Bed
  • Glass Snow Shoe #1 and #2
  • Lost Sole
  • The Three
  • Tiny Toxogoligy

As these are in their development stages we will add photos to the website as they are completed.

We hope you will be intrigued by what we are planning and will come and stay and enjoy them.
